Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Liverpool vs Man Utd

Arsenal vs Brighton

The Gunners were frustrated against Villa last weekend, but will be hopeful they can seize victory against the Seagulls on Sunday.

Arteta’s team face a Brighton side that were forced to work hard for the win against Marseille in the Europa League on Thursday; the south coast side have struggled to juggle the demands of Prem and European competition, winning just two of their last 10 league games.

Arsenal also saw their title challenge come apart last season when Brighton beat them 3-0 back in May. Getting some measure of payback for that result may lend the Gunners additional motivation this week.

In fact, Arsenal have lost their last three at the Emirates against Brighton, perplexingly for the Gunners. But it looks a good time for the north London side to improve that record.

Both Teams To Score looks practically a given, with Brighton having found the net in their last 32 Prem games while also conceding in their last 20.

Combine BTTS Yes with Arsenal to win for a double at 9/5 – or add over 3.5 goals for a 3/1 treble. Brighton’s last two away games have each featured five goals.

Brentford vs Aston Villa

It’s four defeats from five for Thomas Frank’s team. Can the Bees recapture their buzz against title challengers Aston Villa?

As impressive as Villa have been, it’s worth remembering Unai Emery’s side are less formidable on the road. Villa have won only one of their last four away games in the Prem, and were turned over 2-0 by Nottingham Forest at the City Ground last month.

The hosts probably shouldn’t be underestimated then. Rather than back Villa, perhaps it’s better to place your faith in Ollie Watkins to keep finding the net. He’s done so in his last two away games, and is 6/4 to score anytime on Sunday.

West Ham vs Wolves

In recent weeks, West Ham have gone from the satisfaction of beating Tottenham at home to the ignominy of having five hit past them at Craven Cottage.

That latter result saw some people calling David Moyes’s future with the Irons into question. Can Wolves make life more uncomfortable for the Glaswegian on Sunday?

Gary O’Neil’s side have lost their last three away games – not a ringing endorsement of the visitors. Indeed, a lukewarm afternoon of football could be in store at the London Stadium; three of the last four meetings between these sides has featured just one goal.

Wolves have scored just one goal in each of their last three Premier League matches, as well. So backing under 2.5 goals at 10/11 could work out here.

Liverpool vs Man Utd

Liverpool are top of the league, and unlikely to be “knocked off their effing perch” (to quote Alex Ferguson) by this current Man United side.

Klopp’s side have lost once all season in the Prem, winning every game at Anfield. Man United are ten points behind the Merseyside team – and are currently reeling from setbacks. The Red Devils were knocked out of Europe after defeat to Bayern Munich earlier this week.

Erik ten Hag’s team have also lost two of their last three league games, suffering an embarrassing 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend.

Even hoping that an encounter with bitter rivals Liverpool will rouse United seems fanciful. When these sides last met at Anfield, the hosts won 7-0. And United haven’t even found the net in their last four visits.

Football can always surprise you, but on current evidence the Manchester side have very little reason for optimism. There’s plenty of reason to think Liverpool may be able to slot home a few goals, though.

There’s a real possibility this could be another goal-heavy game – and you can back over 5.5 goals at 4/1. If that sounds too good to be true, alternatively you could combine Liverpool to win, over 3.5 goals and Salah to score in a treble at 9/5.
