Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Liverpool vs Spurs
Brighton vs Aston Villa
Brighton are shambling towards the end of the season in ragtag fashion; Roberto De Zerbi’s side have lost five of their last eight league games, and mustered a grand total of one goal in April.
Maybe they’re catching Aston Villa at a good time, though. The Midlands club suffered a 4-2 defeat to Olympiacos in the Europa Conference League on Thursday, and may not be at their sharpest as they travel to the Amex.
That’s a rare ray of sunlight for the hosts. Even leaving aside Brighton’s wretched current form, their past history with Villa doesn’t make for happy reading either. The Seagulls have lost their last five meetings with Villa. When the teams met back in September, the Villans won 6-1.
With Villa so dominant against the hosts in recent meetings, it would be no surprise to see Unai Emery’s men make Brighton pay for Thursday’s Greek tragedy. Villa are 7/5 for the win.
Chelsea vs West Ham
Only two points separate these sides, but while Chelsea enjoy an erratic reputation they’ve been solid at Stamford Bridge in recent months; they won in pretty straightforward fashion against Spurs on Thursday night, their fourth home win in five in the Prem.
West Ham haven’t had much to cheer home or away lately; the Irons have one win in eight matches, even if they put in a creditable 2-2 draw against Liverpool last time out. David Moyes’ side did win the reverse fixture 3-1, if that counts for anything.
Nevertheless, combining Chelsea to win and BTTS Yes in a double at 31/20 might be a decent bet; West Ham have scored in nine of their last 10 league games.
Liverpool vs Spurs
It doesn’t look like Jurgen Klopp is going to sign off with another league title for Liverpool; but in his penultimate game at Anfield, can the tetchy Teutonic coach at least win a game?
That may sound a modest ambition. But the Reds’ two previous home games, against Crystal Palace and Atalanta, both ended in defeat.
Liverpool lost away to Everton before drawing to West Ham in east London last weekend too, so it’s hardly nailed on that the Merseyside team can score an easy win over Tottenham. That said, Spurs haven’t been at their sharpest in recent weeks, either.
Ange Postecoglou’s men have lost three on the bounce, to Newcastle, Arsenal and Chelsea.
We can’t be sure of the outcome – but goals often seem a good bet when these sides get together. Last season, this fixture ended 4-3 to the hosts. Each of the last seven meetings between these two sides have seen both sides score, too.
Alas, BTTS is priced accordingly. Combine BTTS Yes with over 3.5 goals in a double gives you 4/5, though.
Alternatively, you could back Son Heung-Min to net for Tottenham; he has a fine record against Liverpool, scoring five goals across Spurs’ last seven encounters with Klopp’s side. Son is 13/8 to find the net on Sunday.
