Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Man Utd vs Liverpool
Brentford vs Leicester
Brentford could be welcoming the Foxes at precisely the wrong time, with Leicester having registered two fine results in the last seven days.
Brendan Rodgers’ side beat Manchester United in swashbuckling style last weekend, before Patson Daka scored four goals against Spartak Moscow in the Europa league to become Leicester’s joint highest ever scorer (with four goals) in Europe.
The Bees have had a magnificent start to the season, while Leicester were less than convincing to start with. But with James Maddison looking more like his old self and Jamie Vardy continuing to find the goals, the Midlands side may give Thomas Frank’s team a stern examination on Sunday.
These two sides don’t have a lot of recent history, but did meet in the FA Cup in both 2020 and earlier this year, with Leicester winning both matches. If you expect that run to continue here, you can back a Foxes win at 7/4.
Vardy has scored in his last four league appearances and already has seven goals this season – not bad for a 34-year-old striker. The Foxes forward is 7/4 to find the net here – but after finding four against Spartak on Thursday, if Daka starts it might be worth backing him to find the net at 41/20, too.
West Ham vs Tottenham
Spurs have been improving with back-to-back league wins in the run-up to this encounter. But the Irons are in decent nick, winning five of their last six matches in all competitions.
There’s needle between these sides, but West Ham seem to take the rivalry more seriously – could that help to turn this match in their favour on Sunday? David Moyes’ side won the corresponding fixture last season, but before that Spurs had won on their last three trips to the London stadium.
A second string Tottenham side lost in Europe on Thursday (while West Ham won their Europa League match 3-0 against Genk). But Tottenham, and Harry Kane, looked a little more like their old selves against Newcastle last weekend when they spoilt the Magpies’ party.
After concern about Kane’s poor showings so far in this campaign, the England captain may be getting back to something like his best – he scored his first league goal of the season against Newcastle, and a fine finish it was too. Kane is 29/20 to score on Sunday.
For the hosts, Michail Antonio has a strong record against Tottenham with five goals scored against them in total; Antonio is 29/20 to score at any time.
But with West Ham failing to win any of their last three home games – they lost against Brentford and Man Utd, and drew against Palace before that – Spurs might still be able to get the better of the Irons here. Nuno’s team are 2/1 for the win.
Man United vs Liverpool
Man United lost 4-2 against Leicester last week, then followed that up with a thrilling 3-2 win over Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday. Liverpool have scored 30 goals in their last nine matches in all competitions. Super Sunday should really live up the hype this time, no?!
Well… last time Liverpool visited Old Trafford, back in May, Klopp’s side schooled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, winning 4-2. But the two meetings before that ended 1-1 and 0-0, and despite the wealth of attacking talent available to the United coach, Ole does tend to play it safe when he comes up against the Prem’s more dangerous sides.
United are winless in their last three league games. While Solskjaer could certainly use a win he definitely doesn’t want a loss. Does that mean we’re in for a defensive, counter-attacking, decidedly unspectacular spectacle on Sunday?
Well, only if Liverpool don’t score early. If Ole’s plan has to go out the window, maybe this will turn into another rollicking, unpredictable affair where United look to their array of attacking talent to save the day.
And Liverpool could undoubtedly score early; in each of their last couple of outings, they’ve found the net before the ten-minute mark.
Liverpool are unbeaten all season, too, while United have lost at home to West Ham (in the Carabao Cup) and Aston Villa already. Even if Ole tries to keep things tight, a side that have kept just one clean sheet all season will surely struggle to keep Salah, Mane and co at bay here.
Liverpool are 5/4 to win. Over 3.5 goals is a 29/20 shot.
