Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Man Utd vs Liverpool
Chelsea vs Crystal Palace
Chelsea are bonkers, and I can’t take my eyes off them. Players come, players go, but the Blues endure as the Prem’s basket case bonfire of the vanities, fistfuls of money continually splurged as the club seek to find a route back to recent glories.
On the other hand, they did win 6-2 last week. Cole Palmer is brilliant and likable too. And Noni Madueke’s charm offensive last week added another aspect to his hat-trick hi-jinks.
Chelsea are box office – but can they keep the chaos coming in a positive fashion?
At home against a Crystal Palace side that have started the season in chastening fashion, is this another opportunity to run riot? Or can the Eagles make this a challenge for Enzo Maresca and the boys?
With Chelsea struggling for clean sheets, the visitors may at least be able to find the net. BTTS Yes and Chelsea to win in a double is a 17/10 shot.
Newcastle vs Spurs
Newcastle haven’t quite looked like the free-scoring side that lit up the Prem so frequently last season. Will they have the bit between their teeth as they host a Spurs side the Magpies turned over 4-0 in this fixture back in April?
Eddie Howe’s team have only scored a single goal in each of their fixtures so far this season. That could change on Sunday – but when Spurs aren’t shipping goals, they’re producing them. Postecoglou’s side could have had more than the four they put past sorry Everton last weekend.
This fixture at St James’ Park definitely lends itself to goals; the Mags won 6-1 in April 2023, with Spurs winning 3-2 in October 2021. The last seven matches between these teams have each seen a minimum of three goals.
It would be a surprise if this game doesn’t deliver similarly goal-heavy entertainment, and over 3.5 goals is a 23/25 shot.
Man Utd vs Liverpool
Liverpool have enjoyed a fairly gentle start to life under their new coach. Could the trip to Old Trafford pose a greater challenge to Arne Slot?
United might not be the fearsome club of old, but Liverpool failed to beat their local rivals in all three meetings last season; two draws and a win for the Red Devils in the FA Cup.
That’s an encouraging record for United; less encouraging is the news that they’ve won just one of their last 12 league meetings with Liverpool. That seems sub-optimal.
The hosts haven’t exactly started the season in superlative fashion; last week United lost at the death away to Brighton. Erik ten Hag’s role doesn’t exactly seem secure, then.
But at the very least, the hosts will endeavour to produce a tenacious display against a side they hate to lose against. Will that be enough?
Who knows if Slot is a worthy successor to his illustrious predecessor, but the team is comprised of the same players that have regularly impressed under Klopp – and they’ve started the season positively. In the short term, you’d expect Liverpool to mostly keep winning.
Mo Salah has started this campaign with goals in both of his appearances so far; back Salah to score against United and Liverpool to win in a double at 39/20.
