Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Newcastle vs Liverpool
Burnley vs Aston Villa
Vincent Kompany’s side are looking for a first point of the season, but wrestling anything away from Aston Villa won’t be easy.
Unai Emery’s Villa smashed four goals past Everton a week ago, and followed that up with a 5-0 showing against Hibs in the Europa Conference League on Wednesday.
The Midlands side are scoring for fun, and may be able to notch up a few more at Turf Moor. In recent visits, Villa have won two of their last three games away to Burnley, and in their current mood they may be able to add to that record.
Ollie Watkins scored three on Wednesday night, and may be the man to make the difference this time. Villa are 11/10 to take the win, while Watkins is 33/20 to find the net. Or you could combine the two in a double at 5/2.
Sheffield United vs Man City
Fair to say this one’s a mismatch. The hosts are amongst the likeliest teams for the drop; the visitors overwhelming favourites to finish as champions (again). There’s nothing to suggest anything but pain lies in wait for the Blades on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola will not be in attendance, with the City boss taking it easy after undergoing back surgery earlier this week. But even without the hyper intense coach chivvying his players along, it’s hard to see how this one goes awry for the Citizens.
Assuming he starts, you’d think Erling Haaland can enjoy himself here; the big man is 9/5 to score at least twice.
Newcastle vs Liverpool
The Magpies were widely expected to give Man City a proper game a week ago, so City’s 1-0 win at the Etihad was a tad anticlimactic.
But Eddie Howe’s side may put in a more rousing display at St James Park on Sunday – even against a Liverpool side that are unbeaten since April Fool’s Day.
There’s still a slight sense of anxiety around the Merseyside team at the moment, a feeling that things aren’t quite working out according to plan. Recent transfer business has thrown a few curveballs in Klopp’s direction; could upcoming matches be about to do something similar?
Possibly, but Liverpool will take heart from the fact they did beat Newcastle at St James Park back in February. This game could offer chances at both ends, and BTTS at 4/9 seems a decent shout. As does Alexander Isak to score at 8/5.
