Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Newcastle vs Man Utd

With these two sides mired in the bottom three and separated by a single point, looks like we got ourselves a good old-fashioned six-pointer. So which way does this one go?
It’s plain that the Irons aren’t having a landmark season. For all that, they are unbeaten in their last four league games at the London stadium.
Meanwhile, they might be rock-bottom of the league table, but Southampton’s recent fight-back against Tottenham suggests the Saints aren’t going to lie down here.
There’s been talk that David Moyes could face the sack if Southampton nab the away win; on the face of it, that looks a tall order, with the south coast side unable to score in three of their last four away games.
The exception was a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Ruben Selles’ side are clearly capable of pulling the odd rabbit out of a hat, but generally they’re not the most fearsome opposition.
And playing at home, West Ham have turned over fellow relegation candidates Everton and Forest already in 2023. Another home win looks realistic; with Southampton’s problems scoring, back West Ham to win and BTTS No in a double at 29/20.
Newcastle vs Man Utd
Since Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd beat Newcastle to win the Carabao Cup, United have been blitzed 7-0 at Anfield, and held to a goalless draw at Old Trafford against Southampton.
If Mitrovic had been able to keep his head at OT last time out, Fulham might have got the better of the Manchester side too. What we’re saying is, the Ten Hag era has clearly peaked and this United are in irreversible decline.
We kid. Perhaps a few Man United fans have allowed themselves to overreact a tad in thanking Erik for “bringing the glory days back” after winning the League Cup, but never mind that.
The real point is that Newcastle surely desire a spot of revenge for that Cup defeat, and Eddie Howe would certainly love to pip Man United to third place in the Prem. Winning this one could be a hugely useful step on that journey.
Newcastle have won their last two league games too, and may have the firepower to hurt Ten Hag’s side this week.
Alexander Isak has three goals in his last two outings for the Magpies, and the Swede may provide the heroics at St James’ Park once again this week. Back Isak to score at 41/20.
