Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Spurs vs Man Utd
Liverpool vs Wolves
Liverpool fans might be grumbling about referees in the aftermath of the Merseyside derby. But Arne Slot’s side still haven’t even lost a league game since September.
Dropping two points against their city rivals in the last ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park probably doesn’t mean Liverpool’s title challenge is about to falter.
Even if Wolves coach Vitor Pereira will have watched the midweek game with interest, it seems unlikely this Wolves team can keep the hosts at bay at Anfield. Liverpool have scored four goals in each of their last two home matches.
That was against Spurs and Ipswich, admittedly. Maybe Wolves can keep it a little more respectable. But the Old Gold haven’t had much to celebrate in recent meetings with Liverpool, losing nine of their last 10 away games in the Prem.
The home win seems nailed on, but the odds reflect that. Backing Mo Salah to score may sound stupidly obvious – he’s done so in each of his last five appearances, finding the net six times in that run – but at 5/6 at least you’ll get a greater return on Mo doing Mo things than if you’d simply backed the hosts to win.
Spurs vs Man Utd
Two clubs that are each having fairly unfortunate seasons meet for a Super Sunday showdown which could at least prove entertaining.
Thirteenth and 14th in the league table, Man United are two points better off than Tottenham.
Has there been improvement for United since Ruben Amorim arrived? Not especially; even when the results have been positive, performances have been less convincing.
Last time out against a limited Leicester side in the FA Cup, United needed the considerable bonce of Harry Maguire (plus a sleepy linesman) to win at the death.
United do seem to show more grit against better sides – a 2-2 draw away to Liverpool, a 2-1 win over Man City at the Etihad. But do Tottenham even fall into that bracket right now?
Ange Postecoglou’s side had lost four on the bounce before their away win against Brentford last time out in the Prem. Tottenham can at least point to a long list of injuries. But the hosts have injury concerns of their own, with defender Lisandro Martinez out with a torn ACL.
Still, this one could serve up a few goals – when they last met in the League Cup in December it ended 4-3 to Spurs, while the north London club won 3-0 at Old Trafford back in September. Over 3.5 goals is a 6/5 shot here.
