Premier League preview: Sunday’s action including Tottenham vs Newcastle
Aston Villa vs Brentford
With Steven Gerrard sacked on Thursday night, will we see a positive performance from Villa against the Bees?
The hosts obviously haven’t been amazing under Gerrard – but a draw against Man City back in September shows Villa are capable of holding their own at home.
And Brentford don’t tend to travel so well; stuffed 5-1 by Newcastle earlier this month, Thomas Franks’ side were also beaten by Fulham, and are without a win on the road in this campaign.
Perhaps the visitors will smell blood – but Brentford have looked flat away from Griffin Park, while Villa’s performance against Chelsea a week ago deserved better than a 2-0 defeat. The Villans could enjoy a no-manager bounce here; back Villa at 23/20.
Leeds vs Fulham
Jesse Marsch needs a win. Leeds fans sung the name of former boss Marcelo Bielsa on Thursday, as their side succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Leicester. The Foxes managed just two shots all game, but that was enough to see off the West Yorkshire side, who are without victory since August.
Fulham tend to give the opposition chances to score; nine of their 12 games this season have seen them concede at least two goals. But Leeds have just one goal in their last four matches – and have only scored once in their last three home games, too.
All things considered, it could be worth taking a punt on the visitors. Fulham are 5/2 to take all three points.
Southampton vs Arsenal
With their Europa League win over PSV Eindhoven, Arsenal have now won 13 of their 14 matches this season. Surely the Saints aren’t set to throw a spanner in the Gunners’ works?
Well, the north London club did enjoy some good fortune as they saw off Leeds last week. And Southampton won 1-0 last time they hosted Arteta’s side. Still, Hasenhuttl’s team are definitely more miss than hit; the victory against Bournemouth earlier this week was Southampton’s first since August.
Under the circumstances it’s tough to see beyond an Arsenal win. Tough, also, not to land on Bukayo Saka as the likeliest man to give the Gunners the lead. The brilliant 21-year-old has four goals in his last three games.
Saka is 41/20 to score at any time – or 6/1 to produce the opener, as he did against both Leeds and Bodo Glimt earlier this month.
Wolves vs Leicester
Five of the last six encounters between these sides have featured one goal or fewer, and Wolves famously haven’t found the net much this season; the club’s current goal tally stands at five.
Steve Davis is in charge for the foreseeable future; who knows if the former under-18s coach can cultivate a more ambitious style for the club. Wolves lost to Palace earlier this week having taken a first half lead; meanwhile, Leicester have shown signs of improvement lately.
The Foxes have kept clean sheets in three of their last four outings; but it’s tough to put a whole lot of faith in Brendan Rodgers’ side getting the away win, given what’s gone before this season. Backing under 1.5 goals at 27/10 might be more sensible.
Tottenham vs Newcastle
Spurs were comprehensively outplayed by Man Utd on Wednesday night, but the north London side have won all their games at the Tottenham stadium this season.
Antonio Conte hasn’t exactly delivered thrill-a-minute football, but the side have amassed the same amount of points of Man City at the time of writing; do Spurs fans really have that much to grumble about?
Still, as Graham Taylor might say, this is a real test. Newcastle have made themselves a tough team to beat, losing once all season, away to Liverpool at Anfield.
Spurs are without the injured Kulusevski and Richarlison, too; but Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son can still step up here. For all Newcastle’s improvements, they’ve won one game on the road this season; plus, Tottenham will surely aim to make a statement following that Man Utd defeat. Spurs to win is 21/20…
