Premier League preview: Sunday’s games including Man City vs Man Utd
Burnley vs Bournemouth
We all know how disappointing Burnley’s season has been, given the way they conquered the Championship to get here. That said, the Clarets have drawn two of their last three home games in the Prem. It’s not a mind-blowing record, but could it be something to build on here?
Adoni Iraola’s Bournemouth are yet to win a league game in 2024, so this looks an opportunity for both teams. Will either be able to seize the moment? Maybe not; with both teams struggling for wins and even goals, this one could end in deadlock. The draw is an 11/4 shot.
Man City vs Man Utd
Man United looked to be building some momentum ahead of this game. And then they lost to Fulham last week, exhibiting the same shaky, haphazard football that the side are so desperate to leave behind.
Even when the injured Rasmus Hojlund was fit and firing, the team could shift from flashes of the arrogant but assured United of old – to a side hanging on for the result.
Now Hojlund is out and nobody else is rushing to pick up the slack. Man City may not be the ruthless machine of previous seasons – though Luton fans might disagree – but they still look leaps and bounds ahead of United.
Those hoping Ten Hag can rouse his team for the big occasion may be disappointed. United did earn a 2-1 victory against City last season, albeit at Old Trafford.
In United’s backyard during this campaign, though, City won 3-0; and when these sides met at the Etihad last season, it ended 6-3. That scoreline looks closer than the game felt, too, with City leading 6-1 in the 83rd minute.
As suggested earlier, City haven’t been playing with that kind of swagger in the last few months – but Guardiola’s side did batter Luton 6-2 in the FA Cup on Tuesday. Could the side have clicked into obliteration mode, just in time to welcome Erik and the boys? It’s possible.
Both Phil Foden and Erling Haaland scored hat-tricks in that 6-3 win over United last season. Against Luton, Haaland plundered five goals, and may just have resumed abnormal service in timely fashion for the Citizens.
City are painfully short to win this one, but perhaps backing over 4.5 goals at 43/20 could be worth a look.
Or you could simply back Haaland to score at least two goals at 33/20; with United possibly without Harry Maguire, and definitely missing Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw, United have their work cut out trying to stop the Norwegian.
