Premier League preview: Thursday’s action – including a Liverpool vs Newcastle goalfest?

Leicester vs Tottenham

Brendan Rodgers breathed a little easier after Leicester hammered Newcastle 4-0 at the weekend. Can the Foxes keep the good feeling alive as Antonio Conte rocks up at the King Power to deliver a master class in gesticulation?

It’s not been a great campaign for Rodgers, but Leicester have won their last three home games in all competitions. As for Spurs, they’ve won their last three league games, but are unproven on the road under Conte.

In short, both teams arrive at the King Power with reasons to be cautiously positive. Rather than take a flier on the result, perhaps it’s better to focus on Leicester’s James Maddison, who has rediscovered his best form in recent weeks. The 25-year-old has four goals in his last six appearances, and is 16/5 to find the net once again on Thursday.

Chelsea vs Everton

The Blues have looked oddly haphazard in recent weeks, even if they still did just enough to take all three points against Leeds on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel’s previous blueprint for success was clean sheets and efficiency, rather than the current freewheeling approach that’s seen eight goals conceded in three matches.

Fortunately, Everton may offer an opportunity for a reset. The Toffees were pretty tragic against Palace at the weekend, losing 3-1. In fact, the Merseyside club’s win against Arsenal a few weeks ago is the sole bright spot in a 10-game run that’s included seven defeats.

For all that, Everton have scored in their last three games. And Chelsea’s last four games have seen both sides getting on the scoresheet. Chelsea to win and Both Teams To Score in a combined double gets you 9/4, which may be worth taking a crack at.

Liverpool vs Newcastle

Liverpool have won 1,999 top-flight matches, and will become the first English side ever to win 2,000 if (if?) they win here. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Reds hit that milestone in style against a hapless Newcastle, too.

Eddie Howe’s side did win against Burnley to claim their first victory of the season a few weeks ago – but followed up that rare moment of good cheer by getting absolutely mullered by Leicester at the weekend.

Now the Magpies face opponents who have won their last five games, scoring 14 goals in the process while conceding once. Any one fancy the 20/1 available for Newcastle to win here?

Thought not. Liverpool have actually been less prolific in their last couple of games, winning a couple of 1-nils against Wolves and Aston Villa – but this feels like a good opportunity for the Merseyside team to put on a show.

The odds are priced accordingly, alas. Let’s not even concern ourselves with the odds-on price for Liverpool to win. Total Goals by Liverpool of Over 3.5 seems feasible, though – and you can back it at 11/8.

But perhaps just backing a familiar scoreline is the better option. Liverpool to win 4-0 is a 7/1 shot. With Klopp’s side racking up four goals without reply against Arsenal and Southampton last month, it’s worth a look again here.
