Premier League preview: Tuesday’s action including Arsenal vs Newcastle

On a ten-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League, Arsenal are gunning for the Magpies. But can a resurgent Newcastle team start the new year in memorable style at the Emirates?
A win for Eddie Howe’s side would see the Mags move ahead of Man City into second place in the league. Arsenal top the table, of course. And in their two games since the Prem has resumed, Mikel Arteta’s side have continued to impress, seeing off West Ham and Brighton in irresistible fashion.
The absence of Gabriel Jesus, injured during last month’s World Cup, doesn’t seem to have hurt the North London side.
Bukayo Saka impressed for England in Qatar, and he’s been excellent for Arsenal too. Saka scored against West Ham after the Irons took the early lead in the Boxing Day encounter, and the 21-year-old took just two minutes to open the scoring against Brighton on New Year’s Eve.
The hosts are in rude health for the visit from Newcastle, then. But the Mags are on a decent run of their own, enjoying a 12-game unbeaten streak. Yet surprisingly Newcastle couldn’t find the net against Leeds last time out, the two sides having to settle for a goalless draw on Saturday.
Both Arsenal and Newcastle have lost just one league game all season; and while Arsenal can go ten points clear with a win here, it would be a surprise if the visitors didn’t make them work for it.
Newcastle have won their last three away games in the Prem; and as good as Arsenal have been, they struggle to keep clean sheets, having conceded in six of their seven home games in this campaign.
Does that mean the upset is on? Perhaps, but it seems likelier that Arsenal can produce another win even as Newcastle find the net. You can back Arsenal to win and BTTS in a double at 5/2.
Otherwise, the goal scorer markets are worth a look; the irrepressible Saka is 12/5 to net for the hosts, but it’s tempting to take a punt on Miguel Almiron scoring for the visitors, too. The Paraguayan player has scored in his last three away games, against Leicester, Southampton and Tottenham, and is 4/1 to find the net at any time here.
Everton vs Brighton
Everton stunned Man City when they held them to a draw at the weekend, but that was a rare success for Frank Lampard. The Toffees have lost three of their last four games at Goodison. Meanwhile, Brighton’s away form has the Seagulls winning their last two, against Southampton and Wolves.
Brighton lost against Arsenal on Saturday but finished strongly in that 4-2 loss and are surely capable of outmanoeuvring an Everton side that have just one win in their last nine league games. Back Brighton for the win at 27/25.
Leicester vs Fulham
Fulham have won their two games back since the World Cup finished, Leicester have lost their last two. It wouldn’t even be a huge shock if the Cottagers were to get the better of Brendan Rodgers’ side here. But neither is it nailed on.
Perhaps focusing on goals is a decent alternative. Fourteen of Fulham’s last 15 league games has seen three or more goals scored; over 2.5 goals is a 17/20 shot here, and seems a realistic possibility.
Aleksandar Mitrovic’s fine goalscoring form continues too, the Fulham striker scoring against Crystal Palace on Boxing Day – and in two of his three World Cup games for Serbia, too. Mitrovic is 27/20 to score at any time.
Man Utd vs Bournemouth
Erik ten Hag’s side are in generally good form, winning their last three home games without conceding. As for the Cherries, they’ve lost two games since the restart without finding the net. In fact, Bournemouth have won just one of their last eight outings.
The home win seems inescapable; you can back United to win to nil at 22/25, or back Marcus Rashford to score first for the hosts at 21/5; the 25-year-old has opened the scoring in each of his last two games since the restart. That despite being benched against Wolves for the first half last time out…
