Premier League preview: Wednesday’s action
Man Utd vs Brentford
United’s second game of the season ended in a 4-0 mauling away to Brentford. Erik ten Hag’s side have improved immeasurably since then – but have taken a few backwards steps just recently.
On the face of it, the stage might be set for United to wreak a terrible revenge against the side that humiliated them at the weekend.
But without the suspended Casemiro and injured Christian Eriksen – the pair remain unavailable for Wednesday’s game – Man Utd haven’t been the same team that had supporters believing the post-Fergie malaise was finally finito.
The Manchester side were uninspired at the weekend as they lost away to Newcastle. Their last two home performances haven’t been convincing either; a goalless draw to Southampton, an FA Cup win over Fulham aided by the Cottagers’ mental collapse.
Based on Brentford’s valiant performance against Brighton at the weekend – it ended 3-3 – the Bees at least have the ability to trouble the hosts at Old Trafford. United are winless in their last three league outings; Brentford have lost just one of their last 16 games in the Prem.
Thomas Frank’s side could well find the net; they’ve done so in seven of their last eight games. The draw at 3/1 looks a real possibility, with the Bees drawing five of their 11 league games so far in 2023.
Meanwhile, Ivan Toney has scored in five of his last seven away games for Brentford – including a brace against Man City back in November, when the visitors were unlikely victors.
Toney is 39/20 to score at anytime.
West Ham vs Newcastle
There was talk that David Moyes could be set to depart West Ham if the side lost to Southampton at the weekend. The Irons nabbed an important win in the end, but may find Newcastle a tougher prospect.
The Magpies have won their last three, and Alexander Isak’s good form means the visitors should be confident they can flourish at the London Stadium.
Still, with West Ham unbeaten in five home league games, perhaps it’s better to swerve a bet on the result. Instead, the aforementioned Isak could loom large here; he has three goals in three away starts for Newcastle, and is 19/5 to open the scoring on Wednesday.
