Premier League preview: Wednesday’s action including Arsenal vs West Ham
Brighton vs Wolves
Brighton have drawn eight of their last 10 league games, but can they finally add a win to that run against a Wolves side that have scored one goal since early November?
In fairness, Bruno Lage’s side have made it difficult for opponents, conceding just two goals in their last five games. Away against Brighton, the visitors will surely feel that a point is a strong possibility – and Seagulls boss Graham Potter may have to accept yet another drawn match. The draw is available at 21/10.
It wouldn’t be a shock if this ended goalless, in fact. Two of Brighton’s last four home fixtures have finished nil-nil, as did the Gulls visit to Carrow Road in October. Neither of these two sides are prolific net-troublers, clearly – you can back the 0-0 outcome at 6/1.
Burnley vs Watford
If you’re still inwardly groaning at the prospect of a goalless 90 minutes at the Amex, fair warning – this could be another non-thriller. In fairness Burnley have shown a bit more attacking intent in the recent past, with a total of six goals scored against Brentford and Crystal Palace.
Where Sean Dyche is concerned that’s a rare occurrence indeed; but normality has been restored, with the Clarets failing to score in their last three matches. They did keep West Ham at bay at the weekend, however, which is not to be sniffed at.
Watford’s fortunes haven’t really improved since the arrival of Claudio Ranieri; the Hornets have lost seven matches from nine played under the Italian. Burnley may not be setting any pulses racing, but they have lost just one of their last seven league games, and should be able to keep the visitors quiet.
Backing under 2.5 goals at 4/5 may be a good shout. But there’s got to be a fair chance Burnley can actually win this one – the home win is a 23/20 shot.
Crystal Palace vs Southampton
Southampton were handily beaten by Arsenal at the weekend despite starting well against the Gunners. Can they produce a result against a Palace side that have only lost one of their eight home games under Patrick Vieira?
It seems unlikely, given Saints have won just one away game all season. Palace were far too good for Everton at the weekend too, and should view this encounter as a fine opportunity to build some momentum. The home win is a 23/20 shot.
Arsenal vs West Ham
Arsenal will be led by a new captain here, with Aubameyang stripped of the captaincy after a “disciplinary breach” last week – he won’t appear for Arsenal in this match, either.
So will that be an issue for a Gunners side that are unbeaten at the Emirates since August? Arteta’s side have won six of their eight home games in the Prem so far this campaign – but West Ham are fourth in the table, two points ahead of Arsenal, and have enjoyed memorable wins over both Liverpool and Chelsea.
The Irons also won four games on the road in the early part of the season too, but have quietened down since then, and David Moyes’ side had to settle for a point against Burnley at the weekend.
Whatever the situation with Auba, the hosts can maintain their excellent home record with a victory on Wednesday. Back Arsenal to win at 23/20.
