Premier League preview: Wednesday’s action – Liverpool vs Fulham, Man City vs West Ham
Liverpool vs Fulham
Last time Fulham visited Anfield they enjoyed a 1-0 victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side. The Cottagers held the Merseyside team to a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage earlier this season, too. Can Marco Silva pull off another startling result on Wednesday?
It’s probably worth remembering that Fulham have only won two of their last nine league games. Those victories came against Everton and Leeds.
Still, this trip could at least provide entertainment for the neutral, even if Liverpool are enjoying their most consistent run of the season, unbeaten in six, winning their last four.
Despite that, Liverpool’s defensive performances remain befuddling. In a recent home game, the side conceded twice against Nottingham Forest.
And this weekend, Liverpool went 3-0 up against Tottenham after 15 minutes on Sunday. Yet somehow in stoppage time the score was level, Spurs fighting back for what seemed a share of the points, with Richarlison’s belated first league goal for the club.
A minute later, Diogo Jota scored for the hosts to give Liverpool the win, just when it seemed they’d blown it. Utter insanity – but also a reminder of just how penetrable Klopp’s side have become.
Fulham’s visit will presumably offer a slightly less chaotic encounter – but who can say for sure? the West London side were impressive in defeat against Man City at the weekend, refusing to lie down against Guardiola’s behemoth.
Given Liverpool’s recent showings, BTTS Yes at 22/25 seems a realistic outcome; over 3.5 goals at 21/20 is another approach, and would have paid off in four of Liverpool’s last five.
Man City vs West Ham
City have won their last eight league games and are now huge odds-on favourites to win the title; it feels optimistic to think West Ham can play a role in derailing the Citizen’s bid to be crowned champions.
Not that the Irons are without threat; they put three goals past Crystal Palace this weekend, even if they still ended up losing. The side’s last two wins – against Fulham and Bournemouth – have come on the road too, though a trip to the Etihad obviously offers a greater challenge.
It probably won’t blow your mind to learn that City have been victorious in their last six home games against West Ham. None of those wins have been routs, and David Moyes’ mindset here will presumably revolve around damage limitation. That said, City have scored at least three goals in five of their last six league games.
Haaland has plenty of motivation to find the net too, not that he seems to need it. Should Haaland score another league goal in this campaign, he’ll break the all-time record for goals scored in a single Premier League season – the Norwegian currently has 34.
