Pussy Riot: in honour of Cats Clans 2, the greatest fictional felines ranked
Partial to a bit of Cat Power? Cat Clans 2 Mad Cats is coming to our casino very soon. And for a limited time, this stellar slot is going to be exclusive to 32Red.
New from Snowborn Studios and Games Global, Cat Clans 2 is the sequel to the medieval-themed Cat Clans. But this time, the action shifts from catapults and castles to a fur-themed future shock.
Yes, this masterpiece of slot gaming dares to imagine a post-apocalyptic landscape where roving bands of feline desperados fight for survival. Think classic eighties movies of road warriors and marauding mutants, but with additional meowing.
We’ll have a full preview of Cat Clans 2 Mad Cats shortly. For now, to get you in the mood for one of the hottest slots of the summer, here’s our favourite fictional cats.
5 Jonesy the Cat from Alien
In Ridley Scott’s magnificent Alien, humans aren’t the only lifeform at risk from the terrifying xenomorph of the title. Jonesy, the ship’s cat, plays a small but nonetheless significant role.
This amiable ginger tabby serves to ground the fantastical world of intergalactic space travel in normality, even as a slavering alien lifeform bursts onto the screen.
And while Jonesy sometimes just lies there contentedly being petted by Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley, the cosmic kitty also enjoys a moment in the limelight, looking on with typical cat-like detachment as one of the crew members comes to a brutal end.
4 Vito’s cat in The Godfather
This cute little tyke never gets named in the film. But he nevertheless manages to give Marlon Brando a run for his money when it comes to a performance exuding raw, animal magnetism.
While crime syndicate big shot Vito Corleone meets a procession of visitors hoping the Don is willing to do them a favour, the cat simply wriggles around in Corleone’s lap, meowing for attention as Marlon mumbles his way through the script. In one of the greatest films of all time, this is a masterful cameo.
3 Ulysses in Inside Llewyn Davis
In this Coen Brothers film set amidst the early 1960s folk scene in New York, Ulysses, much like his (temporary) guardian, isn’t the most ingratiating of characters.
When down-on-his-luck folk singer Llewyn reluctantly finds himself looking after the cat – and having to take it onto the New York subway – it’s not a total surprise when the ginger feline tries to ditch Llewyn. This is a foretaste of what’s to come.
Oscar Isaac’s grumpy musician at least manages to retrieve the cat on that occasion; that’s definitely a rare win for Davis in a downbeat period piece where every decision he makes is a disaster. Llewen might not get a happy ending, but at least things worked out for Ulysses…
2 Blofeld’s cat in various James Bond films
Another powerful man who issued orders while petting a cat in his lap, Blofeld is a long running James Bond villain, invariably accompanied by his feline companion.
Often in earlier films, the camera focuses on the white Persian cat even as the megalomaniacal villain details his latest plan for world domination. A somewhat unsympathetic feline, there was nonetheless an outcry in Diamonds Are Forever, when Sean Connery’s Bond booted the luckless moggy – one of the greatest fictional cat-based atrocities of all time, at least until the Judi Dench film of a few years ago.
1 Sylvester the Cat
Even after all these years, the original Looney Tunes cartoons continue to crack up the discerning comedy fan. Check out Bugs Bunny in the incomparable Rabbit of Seville for proof.
Sylvester the Cat is another legendary character from the Looney Tunes vault. Best known for his spluttered “suffering succotash” catchphrase, Sylvester spends most of his time plotting to catch the sweet little Tweety Pie for his own nefarious purposes.
In the brilliant Birds Anonymous (it won an Oscar!), Sylvester even attempts to go cold turkey on canaries. With Mel Blanc’s irresistible voice combining exquisitely alongside Friz Freleng’s direction, it’s a masterpiece of sophisticated animated entertainment – and it’s hardly the only occasion when Sylvester has left the other cartoon cats looking flat.
Released 30th June 2023. In the meantime, visit 32Red Casino to check out a wide range of table games and slots!
