Usyk vs Fury undercard betting preview
Seven months on from their outstanding undisputed heavyweight title fight, Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury are back in Riyadh and ready to renew hostilities on Saturday night. For all the latest fight odds, visit our sportsbook.
The eyes of the world will be on the heavyweight rematch but there is a long undercard which features some of Britain’s best heavyweight prospects, a couple of crunch domestic showdowns and an unlikely world level opportunity for a British fighter.
Let’s have a look through the undercard.
JOHNNY FISHER, 12-0 (11 KOs) V DAVE ALLEN, 23-6-2 (18 KOs)
HEAVYWEIGHT
Johnny Fisher and Dave Allen are two of the most popular fighters in British boxing but the heavyweights will meet in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night.
Fisher is quickly improving. The Romford Bull has always been big, dedicated and strong but is becoming more and more accomplished by the fight. He has boxed twice this year, scoring two first round knockouts and poleaxed Alen Babic in just 36 seconds in July. Fisher seems to hurt anybody he hits cleanly and looks like he is starting to believe that he has a major future in the sport. Another quick Fisher stoppage – under 4.5 rounds – is available at 22/25.
Although Allen has been inconsistent and made some poor career choices, he is a naturally talented, tough fighter. He believes that he is far smarter and more skilled than anybody Fisher has ever faced. Allen won national amateur titles before Fisher started boxing and won’t make any rash early mistakes. For the first time in his career, Allen has dedicated himself to a 12 week training camp. An Allen decision victory is priced at 28/1.
MOSES ITAUMA, 10-0 (8 KOs) V DEMSEY McKEAN, 22-1 (14 KOs)
HEAVYWEIGHT
Heavyweight prodigy, Moses Itauma, gets his first true test when he takes on ambitious Australian, Demsey McKean.
19-year-old Itauma has began to resemble a surefire future star and the loudly stated ambition for him to beat Mike Tyson’s record and become the youngest ever heavyweight champion suddenly doesn’t appear too far-fetched. Itauma is fast, clever and supremely skilled. He has breezed through his first ten fights but McKean looks certain to pose some different questions. Itauma is 1/4 to add another stoppage to his record.
Last year, McKean hung in with Filip Hrgovic before being stopped in the 12th and final round. McKean is an imposing figure who stands 6ft 6in tall, has stopped 14 of his 23 opponents and will not fear the younger man. McKean will be sure that if the fight reaches the second half, he will be able to impose his strength and size. A shock McKean win is available at 21/2.
ISAAC LOWE, 25-2-3 (8 KOs) V LEE McGREGOR, 14-1 (11 KOs)
FEATHERWEIGHT
The fight between the two British featherweights could well be the pick of the undercard fights. Lowe and McGregor were due to fight a year ago but finally cross swords on the biggest card of the year.
McGregor has been looking for a route back to this kind of level for sometime. After becoming the fastest British fighter in history to win British, Commonwealth and European titles, the Scotsman has rather unfairly been pushed out of sight after losing an exciting decision to Erik Robles for the IBO world title. He sees a win over Lowe as his ticket back to the big time. A McGregor stoppage victory is available at 29/10.
Lowe has been ticking over since losing to Nick Ball two years ago. This will be his second Riyadh Season appearance but he will be fully aware that he is overdue a major victory. Lowe is priced at 12/5 to win on points.
SERHII BOHACHUK, 24-2 (23 KOs) V ISHMAEL DAVIS, 13-1 (6 KOs)
SUPER WELTERWEIGHT
In September, Ishmael Davis stepped in on a few days notice to fight Josh Kelly on the massive Riyadh Season show at Wembley Stadium. A couple of weeks ago, Davis received another phone call and, again, he said ‘Yes’.
This time, Davis replaces the injured Israil Madrimov and fights the dangerous, tough Ukranian, Serhii Bohachuk.
In August, Bohachuk lost a close decision to the brilliant Vergil Ortiz in one of the best fights of 2024. The tall, aggressive southpaw is extremely heavy handed and will be confident of getting back on the winning track against the man from Leeds. He is 2/7 to record a stoppage victory.
The slick, smart Davis, understandably, paced himself and boxed sensibly against Kelly but has had a little more time to prepare this time and will be fighting in his favoured super welterweight division. A stunning Davis decision is priced at 16/1.
PETER McGRAIL, 10-1 (6 KOs) V RHYS EDWARDS, 16-0 (4 KOs)
SUPER FEATHERWEIGHT
Peter McGrail spent weeks preparing for a British and European title fight with Dennis McCann. Instead, McCann’s late removal from the card means that the Liverpudlian instead faces the unbeaten Welshman Rhys Edwards.
After having everything to gain, McGrail now finds himself with everything to lose. Edwards is a talented fighter who has been in excellent form. He has been ready for a step up for some time and was already preparing for a fight in early January. Edwards is available at 33/10 to spring the upset.
McGrail was an outstanding amateur who has recovered well from a shock knockout loss to Ja’Rico O’Quinn last December. He carries underrated power and still appears to be improving as a professional. A McGrail stoppage victory is priced at 7/4.
