At a Glance

In Blood Suckers, you play as Van Helsing, hunting down vampires for a bloodfest of rewards. It was released in 2009 by NetEnt, but it remains a cult favourite thanks to its unique blend of immersive audiovisuals, a captivating storyline, and engaging bonus features. We’ll break down all its features and mechanics in the Blood Suckers slot review below.

Game name Blood Suckers
Theme Vampire
Provider NetEnt
Year of release 2009

Game Features: Symbols, paylines

Blood Suckers plays out on a classic 5×3 grid with 25 fixed paylines. It offers 7 regular paying symbols and three special characters: a Wild, Scatter, and Bonus symbol.

  • Wild: Represented by a vampire biting into the neck of a victim, it substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter and Bonus symbols. It also acts as a regular symbol, offering a max payout of 300x for landing five-of-a-kind.
  • Scatters: In the main game, 2 or more Scatter symbols landing on the reels award a win and offer a max payout of 100x for landing 5 on a payline.
  • Bonus symbol: Three or more Bonus symbols trigger the vampire-slaying bonus game.

To win, you have to land 3 or more matching symbols on a payline. Wins on different paylines are combined, and only the highest win per payline counts.

Slot Mechanics

Blood Suckers is almost two decades old, so it doesn’t have modern features like cascading reels or Megaways. Instead, it keeps things exciting with an interactive Bonus Game and Free Spins round.

Bonus Game

In the Bonus game, you’re a hunter looking for vampires to slay in a dark room with 12 coffins, three of which are empty. To trigger it, you need to land three or more Bonus symbols on a payline in the base game or free spins round.

The mini-game starts when you enter the room and see the coffins scattered around. You need to click or tap them, then wait for the lid to slide off. If it reveals a sleeping vampire, a wooden stake is driven through their heart, spraying blood and awarding a random number of coins. If bats fly out instead, the bonus round ends, and you receive the total coins won.

Free Spins Round

Blood Suckers’ free spins bonus round doesn’t have any special features or mechanics. It is triggered by landing three or more Scatters anywhere on the reels and offers 10 initial free spins. If you get three or more Scatters in the free spins round, you retrigger the feature and get 10 additional spins.

In the bonus round, all wins are tripled except during the additional free spins. It doesn’t offer any other special feature, such as expanding or sticky Wilds.

We noticed during our Blood Suckers slot review that the free spins round doesn’t trigger as often as the Bonus game.

Return to Player & Game Volatility

Blood Suckers has an RTP of 98%, significantly higher than the industry average of 96%. In theoretical terms, this places it above the industry average for long-run RTP online slots , though actual results for any player can vary significantly. Its medium volatility strikes a balance between small, frequent wins and occasional significant payouts.

During testing for the purpose of the Blood Suckers slot review, we noticed wins appearing fairly often, a pattern consistent with the slot’s stated hit frequency, though outcomes can vary.

Payout Table

Blood Suckers has a max win of 900x the stake. It’s pretty low compared to other NetEnt slots, but it fits the symbols’ low payouts. Here’s how much they pay for landing 3, 4, and 5 on a payline.

  • Wild: 8x, 80x, 300x
  • Scatter: 4x, 25x, 100x

  • Crossbow: 0.08x, 0.6x, 3x

Audiovisuals

The online casino game nails the vampire lore with haunting visuals, chilling sound effects, and a shadowy castle backdrop. The vibe will keep your hair standing on end.

However, the game shows its age in its graphics and animations, but, like old music and movies, it has a certain charm that transcends time.

OurRating

When creating this Blood Suckers slot review, we assessed the slot based on seven key metrics that define the player experience. Here’s how it performed.

Gameplay excitement (18/20)

Blood Suckers is pretty exciting for a slot that has been around for over 15 years. Wins can occur fairly regularly during gameplay, thanks to the slot’s relatively high hit frequency, so there’s always something happening in the base game and free spins feature. Plus, the interactive Bonus game helps break up the monotonous reel-spinning meta of most slots.

With its chilling storyline, immersive graphics, and interesting Bonus game, the slot offers an unmatched gaming experience that will keep players coming back for more.

Bonus features quality (15/20)

The first thing we noticed about the two bonuses during our Blood Suckers slot review is how much they contrast.

To begin with, the free spins round is pretty basic. Without features like sticky wilds, tumbling wins, and progressive mechanics, it doesn’t feel any different from the basic gaming mode.

In contrast, the Bonus game is fun and engaging. Instead of just spinning the reels, you take on the role of a vampire hunter, opening coffins and slaying the beasts in a bloody hunt for generous rewards. The suspense of not knowing whether the next coffin will be empty or not is compelling.

Max Win Potential (15/15)

As we mentioned earlier in this Blood Suckers slot review, the game has an RTP of up to 98%, medium volatility, and a high hit frequency of 45%. This combination maximises the winning potential in the following ways:

  • This medium volatility level balances smaller, more regular wins with the chance of bigger payouts, without the extreme swings seen in higher-volatility games.
  • Its RTP of up to 98% means higher or more frequent payouts than lower-RTP slots.
  • The hit frequency means you will land a win every couple of spins, as we experienced during our Blood Suckers slot review and tests.

Unfortunately, the regular symbols have low payouts, and there is no multiplier in the base game. You have to target the bonus features to land some sizable wins.

Volatility balance (15/15)

Not once does Blood Suckers feel boring, thanks to its medium volatility. It offers a stable middle ground between large, infrequent payouts and small, frequent wins. The winning combinations don’t occur on every spin, but they also don’t disappear for more than a couple of rounds. This means your balance is likely to see more gradual movement rather than the sharp swings associated with high-volatility slots, though losses are just as possible as wins.

Theme and design (7/10)

As noted in our Blood Suckers slot review, the game has an immersive vampire theme. The gothic layout, eerie sound effects, themed gameplay, and atmospheric background pull you right into the spooky world of Transylvania.

The graphics and animations are decent, but they lack the polished, high-definition quality found in modern video slots. Still, the symbols are detailed and meticulously rendered, similar to hand-drawn horror comics from back in the day. You’ll love the slot if you’re into vintage-style stuff.

Replay value (9/10)

Blood Suckers has been a cult classic for over 15 years, a testament to its replay value. Its memorable bonus game, which stands out from generic slots, is the main highlight. But players also keep coming back for its immersive design, high RTP rate, and balanced payouts. It doesn’t feel boring, even after triggering the bonuses several times.

User Experience (10/10)

Despite its age, the game is easy to navigate and play. It has the typical slot layout, with the spin and stake buttons below the grid and the paytable and settings in the top-right corner, so you won’t have to relearn anything to get started.

Most importantly, it has a very well-formatted paytable that details everything players should know about the game, from the symbols to the features. You only need to click the question mark icon in the top-right corner to access it. Even beginners will find it easy to jump into the game, as we experienced during our Blood Suckers slot review.
